The ChemEd AP Symposium was started in ChemEd 1997 by George R. Hague, who was known to his students and colleagues as “Captain Chemistry”. George organized this very popular symposium for several years and in 2002, after he passed away, the symposium was named in his honor. Historically, it is an interactive experience with Q&A throughout. It is an opportunity for AP Chemistry teachers to ask their questions and have a discussion with the AP Chemistry Exam Chief Readers.

“If you are teaching chemistry and you are not having fun, then you must be doing something wrong”.

George R Hague Jr

In the Best of ChemEd session, the focus will be on the results of the 2021 AP Chemistry Exam. The Chief Reader and Chief Reader Designate will present the results of the 2021 AP Chemistry Exam.  They will describe current practices in exam development and scoring, with an emphasis on specific content areas and skills that were tested on the free-response section.  The presenters will share statistical data on student performance and highlight common misconceptions on the most challenging questions.  Participants will learn how the 2021 AP Chemistry Exam was constructed and scored, with the goal of incorporating these assessment practices into their own classrooms. There will be plenty of time to ask questions!
